MAYA NEW YEAR – WAXAJQIB B’AATZ (8 B’aatz)

Meditation for the Mayan New Year

8 Monkey/CHUEN (8 B’atz/B’aatz)

The following is an Offering of Meditation as a way to Honor and Connect with the Day Signs that lead the Journey of the Tzolk’in Calendar. Traditions vary based on the region and the Mayan Priest who leads the ceremony, though all share in the tradition of a “Count of Days.”

The Mayan Fire Ceremony is a sacred passage facilitated by the Mayan Priests, so it is not appropriate for me to attempt to share an interpretation of the traditional Maya Fire Ceremony. So instead, I offer a personal ceremony that was born of Native American practice. However, you may observe the New Year with a Sacred Fire Ceremony of your own design, be it a candle or a bonfire. The most important aspect is to Ask that it be Received in the Spirit of a Divine Intention.

I would offer that any fire that is committed to a sacred ceremony is never left untended, but is given the respect as a living presence from its beginning to its end. In traditional ceremony the fire is tended by someone designated in the role as Fire Keeper, or by the Mayan Priest or Priestess leading the ceremony. In Native American practice the chanting of the 4 directions is a personal sacred ceremony in itself.

NOTE: The 260 Divining Beans
A bundle of 260 divining beans is presented to the new priest or priestess during his or her initiation. In the Highlands of Guatemala they are collected from the Palo de Pito tree, which produces a bright red bean. In the northern hemisphere, the beans of the mescal tree are used. (Both beans are highly toxic, though the medicine men of ancient tradition ingested small amounts as a means of entering a sacred vision. Over time, the tradition turned to the peyote cactus because of the beans potential deadly effects!  Alternatively, one might create their bundle from seeds, crystals or beans… each of the “beans” given their own name as one of the 260 Day Signs. This is something that can be done during the calling of the names to provide a physical representation of the Day Signs to keep in your possession as part of your medicine bundle.
